Mike McCarthy sends subtle message to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones
Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys are already facing the repercussions of their numerous PR disasters, even before the season kicks off. With fans and analysts calling them out, it is only a matter of time before people within the organization start to talk about it too.

Well, it seems head coach Mike McCarthy has taken the first step as a response to Jerry Jones after his disastrous press conference.

Mike McCarthy is about to start the last season of his current contract with the Dallas Cowboys. With contract negotiations and interests from other teams on the horizon, he took a step.

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, headed into the last year of his contract, has hired agent Don Yee to represent him. Yee represents Jim Harbaugh, Sean Payton and Tom Brady, amongst others. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter revealed McCarthy’s move

McCarthy changing to an agent who is known to extract the right deal out of owners is seen as a shot to Jerry Jones. The famed owner and GM are not very good at giving their personnel the right deals.

Probably McCarthy thinks that if he does manage to overachieve with the team he currently has, he will have leverage when contract talks resume. Jerry Jones is a shrewd negotiator. Having a renowned agent at his disposal will ensure he gets paid as per his achievements.

It could also show that McCarthy is not sure how the season will pan out. Considering the Cowboys have not made significant moves in the off-season, it will be a difficult task to repeat last year’s successes. Even if Jones thinks they have done well.

Mike McCarthy has to achieve similar results with less stars

The Super Bowl-winning coach is in a predicament as the new season approaches. He has seen several key players on both sides of the ball leaving for other teams.

However, owner Jerry Jones has not covered up those losses by making any significant signings to date. Now as they head into the draft, they still have a lot of unanswered questions on their roster.

Mike McCarthy will therefore have to pull out a rabbit from a hat with his current squad. Their draft position also does not necessarily give them elite talent at their required positions. Therefore, he will have to make do with whoever is available. A daunting task considering their rivals have upgraded their deficiencies.

With the next-man-up mentality, McCarthy’s ability to bring out the best in his players will define his season. If he does manage to succeed, that new agent will be able to land him a fat new contract.
