Green Bay Packers still have a need at safety in 2024 NFL Draft

The Green Bay Packers made a huge splash this offseason by signing the top safety available, Xavier McKinney.

McKinney has All-Pro potential and he's been arguably the best player on the New York Giants' defense since he was drafted in the second round of 2020.

McKinney is the real-deal and he should be the perfect piece for new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley to build his (what should be) aggressive defense around. That's not to say the Packers are completely covered at the position, though.

In fact, going into the 2024 NFL Draft there's good reason to believe the Packers will add another safety to the roster via a draft pick. No, it may not be a first rounder, but if there's a solid safety who Green Bay feels can play next to McKinney available in the second or third round, general manager Brian Gutekunst would be wise to draft that player.

Keep in mind, Darnell Savage Jr. is now with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Jonathan Owens is now with the Chicago Bears and Rudy Ford hasn't been re-signed.

That means the Packers currently have only Anthony Johnson Jr. (last year's seventh round pick) and undrafted Tyler Coyle on the depth chart at free safety.

Johnson Jr. has potential, but if Tyler Nubin from Minnesota or Javon Bullard from Georgia --- among a few other prospects -- are available in Round 2, Gutekunst is going to have to take a real long look.

McKinney is great, but the Packers still have a need at safety.
